COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Since the start of September, the University of Maryland (UMD) has witnessed a significant rise in e-scooter thefts on campus, with over 70 reports of stolen scooters. As e-scooters have become increasingly popular among students, they have also caught the eye of thieves.

UMD Police issued an advisory, warning students to be vigilant and take proactive measures to safeguard their e-scooters. The department is stepping up its efforts to combat this growing issue, but they’re also calling on the community to help prevent further thefts.

E-scooters are lightweight, easy to move, and relatively simple to steal when left unsecured. They offer thieves a quick and valuable target. As UMD’s Police Department explained, theft remains the most commonly reported crime on campus, and e-scooters have added to that statistic in recent weeks.

Here are some key steps you can take to protect your scooter:

In response to the surge in thefts, UMD’s Police Department has implemented several strategies to protect the community, including:

UMD’s Criminal Investigations Unit has already made progress, identifying and charging numerous suspects involved in these thefts. One individual is linked to nine separate cases. For more information, students can visit the UMPD’s website, where photos of suspects and updates on cases are regularly posted.

While the police are taking action, students are encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious behavior. If you see someone trying to manipulate a lock or acting suspiciously around parked scooters, don’t hesitate to call 911 or 301-405-3333. The sooner police are informed, the faster they can respond.

Additionally, UMD offers a walking escort service for students who feel unsafe traveling on campus. If you’d like an escort, call 301-405-3555 or use one of the blue light emergency phones located around campus.

With theft on the rise, it’s more important than ever to look out for each other. Stay alert, trust your instincts, and report any suspicious activity to UMD Police.
